According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), almost 300,000 breast augmentations are performed per year in the U.S. Although many women undergo this procedure, there is plenty of misinformation circulating.

MYTH 1: Breast implants interfere with breastfeeding

Some people believe that breast implants affect breastfeeding, while others believe that breastfeeding interferes with breast implants.

Breast implants have no impact on the ability of a person to breastfeed after undergoing the procedure. Similarly, breastfeeding will not affect breast implants. There might be changes in the shape and size of the breast but not linked to breastfeeding but on pregnancy.

MYTH2: Need to be replaced often

There is no need for constant implants replacement unless a complication occurs. For instance, if the implant leaks, ruptures, or capsular contracture. Capsular contracture is the formation of a scar around the implant. The implant can last up to a decade so long as the patient is satisfied with its performance and appearance.

MYTH 3: Improve sagging breasts

Sagging is a result of old age, pregnancy, nursing, and gravity. Implants cannot help improve the sagging nature of some breasts. This is because implants take the shape of the already existing breast tissues. To correct sagging, breast augmentation has to be accompanied by a breast lift.

MYTH 4: Easy to spot one with implants

The materials and designs used in new implants give the implants a more natural look and feel. When breast augmentation is done by a certified plastic surgeon, beautiful results are achieved. It’s therefore hard to differentiate implants and natural breasts.

MYTH 5: The recovery period is long

Like any other surgical procedure, the incisions and surrounding muscles may be painful after the surgery. However, the pain and soreness are managed through medication and gradually decrease one to two weeks after the procedure.

MYTH 6: Can only be performed on younger women

The only factor put into consideration when a patient is undergoing the procedure is the overall health. So long as the patient is healthy enough, regardless of the age, the procedure proceeds.

MYTH 7: Nipple sensitivity disappears permanently after the procedure

Cosmetic surgeons argue that permanent loss of nipple sensitivity is a very rare case. Lack of nipple sensation is an effect experienced by some women after the augmentation procedure. Although, with time, the nerves heal and adjust to the new breast size, the normal nipple sensation returns.

As with any other cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation does not offer any guaranteed results. However, most patients who undergo the procedure are satisfied with their outcome. It is important that before one considers the procedure, they do thorough research on the desired plastic surgeon to ensure an excellent and natural-looking job.
