Protect sleep duration — seven to nine hours for most adults — as a non-negotiable training variable, not a lifestyle luxury. Be consistent with sleep timing, including on days off from training, since sleep is regulated partly by circadian rhythm and consistency supports it. Use the training-induced arousal appropriately — train earlier in the day when sleep is a concern, and treat evening sessions as a signal to build in a deliberate transition to rest.
The relationship between strength training and sleep is one of the most underutilised performance advantages available to any adult who trains. Most people are leaving significant results on the table not because of their programming or their nutrition but because they are sleeping badly and not treating that as the training problem it actually is.
