Itchy Scalp: Don’t Scratch Your Head Over It

Itchy Scalp: 5 Home Remedies (Plus 3 Ways to Prevent It)

Having an itchy scalp (scalp pruritus) is a condition so common among countless people, it may not even be a problem to some at all. For many, though, an itchy scalp can be a real discomfort and can be a sign of an underlying condition.

If you’re among those who find an itchy scalp disconcerting or worse, here are some home remedies for it. But before you can fight the itch, it’s important to determine what is causing it.

What Causes Itchy Scalp?

Dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis) is the most common cause of itchy scalp. A dry, itchy scalp accompanied by visible flakes on the hair or clothing will be the first sign of dandruff.

Allergies. Sometimes, a dry, itchy scalp could just be your head telling you to start rinsing your hair more thoroughly after shampooing. Shampoo residue may irritate your scalp. If a rash accompanies your itchy scalp, chances are, you have allergic contact dermatitis. Especially if you dye your hair often. Black hair dyes often contain PPD (para-phenylenediamine) which might cause allergic reactions.

Head Lice. An itchy scalp could be symptomatic of head lice. Run a lice comb through your hair to check for lice, or ask someone to examine your hair and scalp for any signs of them.

Scabies. Scabies is caused by human itch mites — bugs that bury into your scalp, causing itch that can be so severe it keeps you up at night.

Psoriasis. If you have a dry scalp with reddish patches, silver or white scaling, and dandruff-like flakes, you may have scalp psoriasis. Scalp psoriasis is characteristically itchy, from mild to severe.

Nerve condition. An itchy scalp without visible rashes, scaling, flaking, or other skin reactions can indicate a nerve problem, possibly neuropathy. This condition is a nerve problem caused by disease, damage, or abnormality. Diseases that can have effects on the nerves include diabetes and shingles. Deep scar tissues may also cause nerve damage.

It may happen, however, that what causes your itchy scalp is the kind of water that comes out of your tap. Tap water contains minerals. If the water you get contains calcium and magnesium in high levels, it’s “hard water”. It’s been found that frequently washing hair with hard water can lead to an itchy scalp.

Remedies for Itchy Scalp You Can Do at Home

Apple cider vinegar is known for its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps relieve itchiness from dry skin, as well as diminishing dandruff. Dilute apple cider vinegar in warm water for rinsing the hair after shampooing.

Peppermint oil may be effective for soothing the scalp, relieving itch, and reducing dandruff. Dilute in olive oil, then massage the solution onto the scalp right before shampooing.

Ketoconazole is an antifungal agent effective at reducing Malassezia yeast which is responsible for causing scalp psoriasis. Ketoconazole is available with a prescription and is also an active ingredient in some over-the-counter shampoos made for dandruff, scaling, and itchiness from seborrheic dermatitis.

Tea tree oil has antiseptic, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, as well as anti-inflammatory effects. Tea tree oil, in its pure form, can be an irritant to the skin, so you need to dilute it before application. Add about 10-20 drops to a mild shampoo or blend it with olive oil to massage directly onto the scalp. Tea tree oil has been found effective in relieving or even eliminating itchiness linked to dandruff and head lice.

Shampoos with salicylic acid are effective in treating itchy scalp due to seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. Salicylic acid has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. It also promotes mild exfoliation of the skin, which addresses the itchiness and scaling caused by psoriasis.

Believe it or not, but relaxation techniques that counter the effects of stress may help eliminate anxiety-related itchy scalp. Do try meditation, as it’s been studied and found as being helpful in relieving itchiness caused by eczema.  An Emory University study on meditation found that the perception of itching is possibly improved by this traditional exercise. Meditation provides a coping mechanism and a feeling of control. You can also try meditation to supplement other remedies for itchy scalp.

If in case, you’ve confirmed that you do get hard water in your area, you can address this by installing a high-quality water softener. These systems are designed to reduce the mineral content of water.

If you find yourself constantly scratching an itch on your head, it might not just be a case of general wonderment or a common case of dandruff. Now that you’ve read some common causes of itchy scalp and effective home or over-the-counter remedies, and yet you still don’t find relief, promptly make an appointment with a doctor (dermatologist).
